Glynhir Golf Club Drainage Improvements 2011

The club committee in conjunction with the Chair of Greens and the groundstaff have elected to give priority to essential drainage works on the course.

The first phase of the works, which necessitated the temporary closure of the 1st nine holes, is almost complete. Weather permitting, the 1st nine holes will re-open on 22nd Dec 2011.

The grounds team are hard at work helping to repair and restore areas which have been disturbed as part of the works; this work will continue for several weeks and we hope to have the disturbed areas fully back in play in the early summer.

Competitors in the Boxing Day 3 Club competition will need to beware of several new hazards which have been created on the course.

There are new open ditches on the 1st, 2nd, 4th ,7th and 14th, together with enhancements to the ditches on 8 and 16 and enlarged ponds on 5 and 15.

Generally, open ditches of a trapezoidal profile have been created to replace ineffective sub-surface drainage runs and to improve surface run off in other areas.

The ditches, in addition to being more effective for drainage and easier to maintain introduce additional hazards which may well affect club selection both from the tee and for approach shots.

Further drainage improvements are planned for the spring consisting of a mixture of small diameter sub-surface drainage with sand or gravel banding which will link up with the open ditches. Areas to be treated are still under consideration and will be tackled on a priority basis and this work will be carried out using methods which will cause minimum disruption to the course.

Disturbance to the course has been minimal and confined largely to out of play areas.

Where possible, plant has utilised the buggy paths which are now being improved and repaired as part of this 1st phase of work.

This task has been delegated to the project team who are working closely together to determine the best use of our limited resources.
